How does one Adopt OA/OER for a course?
MYTH: Adopting OA/OER is difficult, more difficult than with commercial texts and other course materials.
The way an instructor adopts course materials at UMW is to submit one’s “textbook orders” to the College Bookstore (for example, see https://www.facultyenlight.com/?storeNbr=8306). This is true whether one adopts a traditional, commercial text or OER/OA materials. With OER/OA or Low-Cost course materials, there is one additional step: The Virginia State legislature now requires universities to indicate in their course registration materials, which course sections have zero cost or “low” cost ($40 or less) for all course materials. Thus, when departments submit their course offerings for the next semester, they must now include those indications where appropriate.
